Welcome

Welcome to our place !  Here at our rescue / shelter we are always happy to meet pet lovers ! We always have numerous cats/kittens and dogs/puppies to adopt, some at our shelter (which is housed at the same building as our thrift store Critters in Priest River) and many more in temporary foster homes.  We keep many of our available pets in foster homes, so are always looking for new foster "moms" and "dads". So come into our shelter an check out our available animals. Our hours are  Monday thru Saturday from noon until 5.

We are always happy to help people learn how to work out problems with their pets. We have a small network of people who have spent lots of time finding answers for owners so they can keep their pets by dealing with any problems. When we don't know the answers we will try to find them.

We live in an area where there is a huge cat problem !!!! We are seeking grant money to help us start a program to help with families who need help with spay and neuter. Some people are not aware that one cat and her offspring cat multiply to 420,000 in just 7 years !!!! Some people feel that because it is a "barn cat"  or "feral cat" that why bother ? But spaying and neutering will keep thousands of kittens from dying from disease, hunger, coyotes, dogs and cars. So even if "the cat" is not that important, please have a heart and save kittens from misery or death by preventing the females from having litters of defenseless kittens.

Our dog problem is not nearly as HUGE as the cat problem, but we still get dogs and puppies every week that are strays, often abandoned to make it on their own, sometimes just lost because they have just moved to a new home with their owner, or sometimes some breeds of dogs are wanderers and some just get a scent and keep moving. Whatever the reason, if they had identification they probably would get back home. Only 1 dog in 20 that we get has a collar and of those rarely is there any identification. You may think your dog or cat will never get lost, but you would be amazed ! We have FREE tags with numbers with our phone number, when a pet gets lost someone calls our number and we look in our handy Pet Tag list and give you a call ! We just returned a dog to it's owner this past weekend. If it hadn't had a tag it may have ended up in Spokane at a kill shelter. Most cities only keep dogs 3-5 days ! Did you know that ? It's very sad, but most smaller cities do not have a city animal facility, so they go to a vet or somewhere for 3-5 days to be boarded and if the owner is not found and the animal control person doesn't find somewhere for that dog to go, it is euthanized. And remember that is after 3-5 days. Check your city and find out ! We are lucky in Priest River as we have a wonderful Animal Control person, she works with us to be sure the dogs are never euthanized. She also speaks to pet owners in the area about proper care, especially in winter, for their pets. I don't believe there has been a single dog put down since she has been with our city !

Our rescue / shelter is totally supported by the money brought in by out thrift store, Critters, donations made by individuals like you, and our several fund raisers we have every year. June or July we have a golf Tournament which is very popular. Check out our current events page  for more info on that.! Another popular event is our Spaghetti / wine tasting / auction we hold in October. Everyone has a good time. We also hold 2-3 Bake Sales a year, and then our volunteers and faithful supporters bake wonderful things for us to sell. When we have a medical emergency, which happens 3-4 times per year, we hold an emergency bake sale with money going directly for surgery. That way no money is taken from our spay / neuter account, as every animal coming in is spayed or neutered before being adopted.

We receive NO Federal, State , County or City money EXCEPT when  the city of  Priest River turns a dog over to us that was picked up by the city animal control officer. We work very closely with the city's animal control person, Tammy, to make sure all dogs end up going back to their owners or finding loving homes.

If you are considering bringing in a new "4-legged member of the family" come see what we have to offer. While our pets are constantly updated on our pages, we still usually have some new pet that is not yet on our pages but is available and you won't know unless you call or stop by. Seeing them on our pages gives you an idea of what the pet looks like, but in person you can tell so much more. We often have people come in to look at one particular cat or dog only to find that they fall in love with a totally different one !
